South Africa’s president appointed a Jewish woman as deputy chairwoman of a national human rights commission. Marlene Bethlehem, a former president of the South African Jewish Board of Deputies, the representative body of the community, was nominated to the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities by both the board and by Chief Rabbi Cyril Harris.
