A tiny Serbian Jewish community launched an international appeal to protect its beleaguered Jewish cemetery. In a dramatically worded e-mail message it said was sent to organizations and people in 130 countries, the community in Nis, Serbia, said the cemetery, founded in the 17th century, was now the site of a settlement of Roma, or Gypsies, who are using many of the gravestones for building material.
