Alexander Bovin, Russia’s first ambassador to Israel, who was regarded as a friend of the Jewish state, died in Moscow. He was 74. Bovin, a popular Soviet journalist on foreign issues, was appointed ambassador to Israel by Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev in 1991 following the restoration of full diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Israel, which had been severed after the 1967 Six-Day War.
