Israel’s Cabinet discussed options for Ariel Sharon’s beleaguered “disengagement plan.” Cabinet ministers on Sunday discussed the implications of the recent Likud Party rejection of the prime minister’s plan to withdraw from the Gaza Strip and some of the West Bank. According to political sources, most senior government officials believe the plan is effectively defunct after it was discredited by Sharon’s own ruling party. But Justice Minister Yosef “Tommy” Lapid tried to shore up support for the plan by saying at the outset of Sunday’s meeting that his centrist Shinui Party would stay in Sharon’s coalition only if the government continues its peacemaking efforts.
