President Bush’s nominee to the Supreme Court strongly upheld the right of a Jewish employee to observe the Sabbath. The White House alerted Jewish leaders to Judge Samuel Alito’s record on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, based in Philadelphia, within hours of his nomination Monday.
