Sephardi cantor Abraham Lopes Cardozo died at age 91 at a Manhattan hospital. A descendant of Portugese Jews, Cardozo was known for his efforts to preserve the music of Spanish and Portugese Jews. He was born in Amsterdam and worked as a cantor and teacher at a Portugese congregation in Suriname, then a Dutch colony, thus escaping the Nazis.
