A 33-year-old Jewish woman from California became the first American to win the London Marathon. Deena Kastor’s time of 2:19:35 on Sunday was nearly two minutes better than her closest competitor’s. Kastor was favored to win the women’s race after her victory in the Chicago marathon last year and second place finish in the Berlin half-marathon in April. A former track runner who earned a bronze medal for America in the 2004 Olympics, Kastor ran her first marathon five years ago in New York.
