An American player in one of Israel’s top basketball teams was arrested on suspicion of felony assault.
Maccabi Tel Aviv guard Will Bynum was taken into custody and remanded Saturday after police determined that he had run down a Tel Aviv man after being involved in a brawl outside a nightclub.
The victim of the hit-and-run was hospitalized in serious condition.
Maccabi Tel Aviv’s chairman, Shimon Mizrahi, said Bynum was innocent of wrongdoing and that at the time of the incident he was fleeing for his life after being attacked by a mob at the nightclub, where he had come to celebrate his 25th birthday.
A trial date has yet to be set.
