Gonzales visits AMIA

The U.S. attorney general toured a Argentine Jewish center that was bombed in 1994. On a tour of South America, Alberto Gonzales visited the offices of AMIA on Wednesday, stopping for a moment at the memorial to the 85 people killed in the 1994 terrorist bombing. After a brief meeting with Jewish leaders in the reconstructed AMIA offices, Gonzales said the U.S. government will “never abandon the fight for justice” in the case, citing the “importance of international cooperation in the war against terrorism.” Luis Grynwald, president of the community’s DAIA political umbrella group, called the discussions with Gonzales “very productive and promising,” but added that he had failed to offer DAIA and other Jewish organizations firm support for Argentina’s Interpol extradition request of nine Iranian officials wanted for questioning in the bombing. “We are confident that after looking at the facts they will be right there with us in this important step to bring to justice those who ordered the AMIA bombing,” Grynwald said.
