The United States has drawn up plans for an attack on Iran and could strike within months, a British newspaper reported. Citing Washington sources, the Guardian reported Sunday that U.S. forces have marked out targets in Iran and could be given the order to attack by spring, though such an operation would more likely take place closer to the end of President Bush’s term in office. The United States, like Israel, has refused to rule out pre-emptive military action against nuclear facilities in Iran if diplomatic efforts fail to prevent it from acquiring the bomb. But the Guardian also quoted Defense Secretary Robert Gates as saying, “We have no intention of attacking Iran.”
