Romney issues pension challenge, again

Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney challenged New York’s governor and U.S. senators to divest state pension funds from Iran — though it’s not clear they’re in fact invested there. “With your new responsibilities overseeing one of America’s largest pension funds, you have a unique opportunity to lead an effort to isolate Iran as it pursues nuclear armament,” the former Massachusetts governor wrote to Gov. Eliot Spitzer, Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Chuck Schumer, all Democrats, as well as to Thomas DiNapoli, the state comptroller who has authority over the pension funds. A similar call Romney issued to his own state last month fizzled when it turned out that Massachusetts doesn’t have any money invested in the Islamic republic.
