Israel Singer and Bobby Brown were fired Wednesday from their posts at the World Jewish Congress. Rabbi Singer, chairman of the WJC’s policy council, and Brown, director of the organization’s Israel branch, were fired by the organization’s president Edgar Bronfman. Bronfman informed members of the organization’s steering committee of the decision in a conference call Wednesday evening that was marred by allegations that several people opposed to the firings had their microphones cut off. The unexpected move is the latest twist in a longstanding dispute between the WJC and its Israel affiliate. WJC also has come under scrutiny for inadequate financial control mechanisms following disclosure of Singer’s transfer of $1.2 million to a Swiss bank account.
