Israel formally named last year’s Lebanon war. The government’s Ceremonies and Protocol Committee this week chose to
call last summer’s conflict with Hezbollah the “Second Lebanon War;” the first was in 1982. The new name is up for Cabinet
ratification Sunday.
The decision came following pressure by Israelis bereaved during the 34 days
of fighting, who feared the government might try to play down the war’s
failings by choosing a less formal designation for it.
