Israel welcomed a new U.N. Security Council resolution against Iran.

“There is no doubt that this resolution is another significant stepping-up
in the international struggle to stop Iran from attaining nuclear arms,”
Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told his Cabinet on Sunday. He was referring to
Resolution 1747, which broadened Security Council sanctions against Tehran
for its refusal to suspend nuclear projects that can be used for
bomb-making.

Israel has hinted that it could resort to a military strike
to prevent its arch-foe from attaining nuclear weapons, but Olmert voiced
hope that Western diplomatic pressure would succeed.

“I would like to emphasize
that the Israeli approach all along has been to prefer a diplomatic,
economic solution to the Iranian problem,” he said. “We will continue
contributing, to the best of our abilities, in the fields where we can have
influence, in order to bolster this international front and ultimately
arrive at the result we seek.”
