The Canadian Supreme Court rejected
a Holocaust denier’s final appeal against his detention.
Ernst Zundel was detained by
Canadian authorities from 2003, when he was deported to Canada from the United
States for overstaying his tourist visa, until 2005, when Canada deported him
to his native Germany, where he is now serving a five-year sentence for
Holocaust denial.
Zundel had claimed the detention
and deportation in Canada were illegal because of his earlier 40-year residency
on Canada, although he has never obtained Canadian citizenship.
On Wednesday, Canada’s highest
court turned down his appeal.
“B’nai Brith Canada is pleased
to learn that the Supreme Court of Canada has in its wisdom chosen to dismiss
Zundel’s last attempt to use the legal system in Canada as a platform for his
brand of hate,” said Frank Dimant, executive vice president of B’nai
B’rith Canada.
