The West Bank and Gaza Strip were included in emergency-relief funds released by President Bush. Bush released $29.5 million Friday from an emergency fund for “humanitarian needs resulting from conflicts in Somalia, Sudan, and Chad” and “breaks in the food pipeline for refugees in Africa, and in the West Bank and Gaza.” Of those funds, $10 million went to UNRWA for the Palestinian territories. The United States does not directly fund the Palestinian Authority now that it is governed by Hamas, a terrorist group. However, it continues to fund relief efforts through non-governmental organizations.
