A majority of members of the U.S. House of Representatives has signed on to co-sponsor a bill that would tighten sanctions on Iran. The bill, initiated by Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.), chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, would authorize action against U.S. companies with overseas subsidiaries that bypass Iran sanctions; further restrict imports to and exports from Iran; limit the president’s ability to waive the bill’s provisions on national security grounds; and ban nuclear dealings with countries that are assisting Iran’s nuclear program. As of this week the bill has 232 co-sponsors, more than half of the House’s 435 members. A similar bill in the U.S. Senate has 39 co-sponsors out of 100 members. The American Israel Public Affairs Committee strongly supports the legislation.
