New York state’s comptroller proposed divesting the state’s pension fund from companies invested in Sudan.Thomas DiNapoli said Monday he would begin a process that could lead to divestment within six months, New York Newsday reported. The $150 billion pension fund, of which DiNapoli is the sole trustee, has about $750 million invested in businesses linked to Sudan. Ruth Messinger, president of the American Jewish World Service, in a statement released Monday said DiNapoli had taken a “critical step” toward ensuring New York funds are not financing the genocide in Darfur.AJWS has been at the forefront of efforts to raise awareness of the situation in Darfur and has been promoting a nationwide campaign to divest from companies doing business with Sudan.
