Israel segregated Palestinians in its prisons along factional lines. In the wake of the factional war in Gaza, the Prisons Service announced Monday that it had stepped up scrutiny on inmates hailing from rival factions. Hamas and Fatah loyalists have been strictly segregated in compounds where prisoners share tent accommodations, Warden Eli Gabizon said. “We received an intelligence warning that what has been happening in the West Bank and Gaza Strip could spread to the prisons, something that would mean many dead and wounded, so we acted,” Gabizon told Israel Radio. “The prisoners watch television and see what is happening.” Israel holds an estimated 10,000 Palestinians for various security offenses.
