An Israeli state audit slammed the government for being unprepared for the effects of Hezbollah’s rocket barrage during last year’s war.
State Comptroller Micha Lindenstrauss issued a scathing report Wednesday on the way 4,000 short- and medium-range rockets fired by Hezbollah paralyzed northern Israel during the 34-day conflict. He said Prime Minister Ehud Olmert was at fault for not properly preparing bomb shelters and evacuation measures for the million-plus residents of northern Israel.
Olmert, who often has traded barbs with Lindenstrauss, said the critique ignored the failings of previous governments in dealing with homefront preparations and that the situation was being redressed. However, many bomb shelters in northern Israel remain in disrepair.
