A Jewish community leader and his wife reportedly were attacked in Ukraine.
Nochum Tamarin, regional director of the Chabad-led Federation of Jewish Communities, and his wife, Bracha, were walking in the western Ukrainian city of Zhitomir on Monday evening when two men approached and then assaulted them, acccording to a report Wednesday by the AEN news agency. Both were hit repeatedly in the face.
One of the assailants reportedly punched Bracha Tamarin as she lay on the ground before fleeing.
The incident comes a month after an incident during in which approximately 20 people chanting neo-Nazi slogans accosted local Rabbi Shlomo Vilgelm near his synagogue. The rabbi was unharmed.
Tamarin told AEN that he believed the police were taking this incident seriously. Oleh Rostovtsev, a spokesman for the Federation of Jewish Communities in Ukraine, has criticized the police in Zhitomir for not combating anti-Semitism.
