Palestinian youths will be hitting the waves off Gaza thanks to a donation arranged by a Jewish-American surfing veteran.
Water-sport companies in Israel got together this week and donated 10 surfboards, each worth around $450, to children in the Gaza Strip, at the behest of 87-year-old Dorian Pascowitz, a Hawaii resident known as one of the world’s oldest wave-riders.
Yediot Acharonot reported Tuesday that Pascowitz, having heard of the great waves off Gaza, contacted an Israeli friend, Arthur Rascowitz, to find ways of cultivating a new generation of Palestinian surfers.
“I’m certain they have international potential,” Rascowitz told the newspaper. “Their beaches are under-expoited. They could become surfing stars.”
Delivery of the surfboards was expected later Tuesday.
