The U.N. Security Council extended by a year the mandate of the peacekeeping force in Lebanon.

The resolution passed Friday extends the mandate of the 13,600-troop force to Aug. 31, 2008. The force was ordered in place last year to police the truce that ended the war Hezbollah launched against Israel.

The Associated Press reported that U.S.-led efforts to include in the resolution a direct call on Syria and Iran to end weapons smuggling to Hezbollah were softened to underscore the obligation of all countries, “particularly those in the region,” to observe the arms embargo.
