Gad Ya’acobi, ex-U.N. envoy, dies

Gad Ya’acobi, a former Israeli Cabinet minister and ambassador to the United Nations, died at 72.

Ya’acobi, who died Monday according to Ynet, was a Labor Party Knesset member from 1969 to 1992. He served as minister of transportation, economics and communications in various governments.

He was tapped by Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin to be Israel’s envoy to the United Nations in 1992 and served until 1996, the period of the breakthrough in peace negotiations with the Palestinians, Jordan and Syria.
