American Jewish businessman and philanthropist Arthur Obermayer will receive Germany’s highest honor.

The Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit will be presented to Obermayer in recognition of his work “fostering German-Jewish-American relations,” the German consulate in Boston said. Obermayer created a Jewish museum in the German town of his ancestors, Creglingen, and seven years ago he established an award that honors the volunteer efforts of non-Jewish Germans to preserve the memory of Jewish history in Germany.

Boston’s German consul general, Wolfgang Vorwerk, will present the award Thursday at Temple Shalom in Newton, Mass.
