The foreign policy umbrella body for U.S. Jewish groups and the Israeli ambassador to Washington praised the Bush administration for sanctioning an arm of Iran’s military.
“The Administration’s decision to designate the Iranian Ministry of Defense, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and several of Iran’s major banks as proliferators of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and supporters of terrorism constitutes a major advance in the War on Terror and the international effort to prevent a nuclear-armed Iran,” the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations said in a statement Thursday. “Iran’s WMD programs and support for terror are grave threats to both the United States and Israel, and serious actions are needed to counter them.”
Separately, Sallai Meridor, the Israeli ambassador, hailed the decision as “a major diplomatic step in the effort to prevent Iran – a global menace and leading sponsor of terrorism – from obtaining nuclear weapons, which threatens international peace and security.”
