Israeli soldier killed in Gaza

An Israeli soldier was killed in the Gaza Strip.

A reserve paratrooper reconaissance unit that has been operating against Palestinian rocket crews in northern Gaza for several weeks came under an ambush Monday. One soldier, a 34-year-old sergeant, was killed, and three of his comrades wounded.

The Israeli unit killed two Palestinians during the clash, at least one of them a gunman.

In southern Gaza, Israeli forces killed a Hamas gunman outside the town of Khan Younis.

An Israeli soldier was wounded in the West Bank city of Nablus when his patrol came under fire. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed responsibility for the attack. Three Palestinians were taken into Israeli custody on suspicion of terrorist links.
