The presidential campaign of U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) ran an ad banner on an extremist Israeli Web site.

The “John McCain for President” banner ran until Monday on www.ahavat-israel.com, a site known chiefly for promoting conspiracy theories blaming the Israeli left for the 1995 assassination of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin. It also runs a photo of pro-settler demonstrators holding aloft a photo of Rabin wearing a Palestinian headdress.

The McCain campaign did not return calls asking about the ad, and the ad did not appear Tuesday evening.

Ma’ariv’s online edition, NRG, ran a captured screen on Tuesday showing the ad and quoted campaign officials as saying they were unaware of the ad buy, but noting that “the senator has been very clear in his support for Israel.”

Daniel Levy, an Israeli peace activist, first noted the ad on his www.prospectsforpeace.com blog.
