Israel apologized for raiding a West Bank city under P.A. security control, the Palestinian Authority said.

The Palestinian Authority said Thursday that Israel apologized for an army operation in the Nablus Balata district earlier this week in which dozens of suspected terrorists were arrested.

Israeli officials had no immediate comment.

The raid was an embarrassment for P.A. President Mahmoud Abbas and Prime Minister Salam Fayyad, who just days earlier deployed 300 of their own policemen in the Nablus area to prove they can provide security ahead of the U.S.-hosted peace summit with Israel in Annapolis, Md.

The United States, which is sponsoring efforts by Abbas and Fayyad to overhaul Palestinian Authority security forces in the West Bank, also complained to Israel about the Balata action, Reuters reported.
