Ukraine’s president is in Israel for a goodwill tour that will include a visit to the Palestinian Authority.

On Wednesday, Viktor Yushchenko met with Israeli President Shimon Peres to give him decades-old documents with secret information about underground Jewish movements and mass Jewish graves in Ukraine, the Jerusalem Post reported.

In his Jerusalem meetings, Yushchenko is expected to ask Israel to recognize the 1932-33 Ukrainian famine as genocide, a key lobbying issue for the post-Soviet republic. Yushchenko also will pay respects at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.

In an interview with Yediot Acharonot, Yushchenko said Ukraine has long admired Israel’s economy and considers it a model for its own growth.
