A Jewish human rights network will be launched on the sixth night of Chanukah. The initiative is the brainchild of Rabbis for Human Rights-North America. Dec. 10, the sixth night of Chanukah, is International Human Rights Day. K’vod Habriot will bring together rabbis, Jewish organizations and individuals committed to working for universal human rights on the basis of Jewish values. The term “k’vod habriot†means “dignity of all human beings,†and is based on the Jewish teaching that all people are created in the image of God and have an inherent right to dignity.
This week the rabbinic group mailed invitations to 10,000 people asking them to join the network. Signators will receive action alerts, including advice on how to join campaigns and take other practical steps in defense of political and economic human rights. In 2004, Rabbis for Human Rights-North America announced Stop Torture Now, a campaign to end torture sponsored by the U.S. government and its agencies. Rabbis for Human Rights-North America is a membership organization of hundreds of rabbis representing every Jewish stream.
