The 11th Pan American Maccabean Games opened Wednesday night at a Buenos Aires park.
More than 3,000 Jewish athletes from 21 countries will compete in Buenos Aires through the Jan. 2 closing ceremony. Most came from countries in South America or North America, with athletes also hailing from Israel, Hungary, England, South Africa and Australia. From tennis to basketball, the participants will compete in 22 different sports.
Argentina’s new president, Cristina Kirchner, received members of the Maccabean delegations on Wednesday at the Government House.
