The U.N. Security Council met in emergency session on the situation in the Gaza Strip.
The 15-member council on Tuesday heard representatives of the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority blame each other for causing the recent wave of violence in Gaza and the ensuing humanitarian crisis, Reuters reported.
During the session, the Security Council considered a draft statement on Gaza written by Libya, which is currently serving as the council’s president.
Reuters said the text expresses “deep concern” about the situation and calls on Israel to ensure the free flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza, but makes no mention of Kassam rocket attacks against Israel, including more than 100 last week.
“I ask each member of the council, what would you do if London, Moscow, Paris or Tripoli was attacked and fired on? Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Cohen, reportedly said. “Would you sit back and do nothing?”
Some Security Council representatives said they would not approve the text until it is more balanced.
