Jews in Virginia are asking lawmakers to defeat a bill that would expand religious expression in schools.
A proposed state law would keep allow students to pray virtually any time, instead of at currently prescribed times like at lunch or before a test; and also leaves vague whether religious expressions in schoolwork should be subject to academic standards.
“Each of these changes are outside the mainstream of longstanding jurisprudence, and therefore risk opening the Commonwealth to unnecessary litigation,” says the letter that the Greater Washington Jewish Community Relations Council this week asked Virginia Jews to send to lawmakers.
