Roland Arnall, a founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, has died.

Arnall, the ambassador to the Netherlands from 2006 until he returned to Los Angeles recently to be with a son who has Hodgkins’ Lymphoma, died of cancer on Monday. He was 68.

Arnall founded Ameriquest, the mortgage company at the center of the subprime mortgage crisis; it went out of business last year.

He was among the top 10 donors to the Republican Party, and a member of the Republican Jewish Coalition, which issued a statement mourning his passing.

California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger lauded Arnall’s role in founding the Simon Wiesenthal Center, which the governor described as “a movement that now promotes peace, human rights and tolerance throughout the world.”
