Muslim and Jewish educators in Sydney broke matzah together at a pre-Passover seder.
New South Wales Education Minister John Della Bosca and Department of Education Director-General Michael Coutts-Trotter joined about 150 Jewish, Muslim and Christian educators at Wednesday’s interfaith seder organized by the NSW Jewish Board of Deputies. “The importance of this event is that it brings together people who hold the next generation in their hands,” Vic Alhadeff, CEO of the Board of Deputies, told JTA.. “The participation of 150 leading educators will help to ensure that the imperative of building bridges and breaking down barriers at all levels of society is appreciated and understood across the board.†Among the leading Muslims present were Dr Ibrahim Attallah, chairman of the board of Al Faisal College; Madenia Abdurahaman, principal, Arkana College; Makiz Ansari, director, Affinity Intercultural Foundation; Jihad Dib, principal, Punchbowl Boys High; Pinad El Ahmad, values curriculum coordinator, Malek Fahd Islamic High School; and Yasmin Gamieldien, deputy principal, Australian International Academy. The Board of Deputies has previously hosted pre-Passover dinners – at which participants read through a customized Haggadah in English – for trade union officials and religious leaders.
