Latvia’s president met with leaders of B’nai B’rith International.

Valdis Zatlers was in Washington last week on an official visit when he met May 1 with B’nai B’rith President Moishe Smith and Executive Vice President Daniel Mariaschin.

Zatlers and the officials discussed NATO enlargement, European Middle East policy and Holocaust restitution in Latvia. B’nai B’rith, which has a lodge in Latvia, has promoted Holocaust education and restitution in Latvia.

Zatlers was meeting with President Bush and other top administration officials to promote NATO membership for Georgia and Ukraine. Russia, already smarting from the NATO membership of former Baltic Soviet republics like Latvia, is fiercely resisting the expansion plans.
