A gathering of Jewish clergy in Manhattan will mark Israel’s Independence Day by calling for equal treatment for Israeli Arabs and Jews.
Calling itself an “alternative celebration” of Israeli independence, the May 8 event in Central Park is organized by Rabbis for Human Rights-North America, an affiliate of the Israeli group that protests house demolitions and other security measures targeting Palestinians.
It will bring together 60 rabbis, cantors and rabbinical students and include a symbolic planting of two trees to represent the intertwining of Israelis and Palestinians.
