Israeli relief workers have reached Myanmar to assist in the aftermath of Cyclone Nargis.
The death toll in the May 3 natural disaster is above 23,300 and rising. More than a million people have been left homeless and without food or safe drinking water.
A team of Israeli volunteer doctors, nurses and water specialists from two Israeli nongovernmental organizations arrived in the area May 8 and is expected to stay three weeks. The team is under the umbrella of The Israel Forum for International Humanitarian and in cooperation with the United Nations.
An aid team from Israel’s Latet-Israeli Humanitarian Aid organization arrived in Myanmar two days later, even though the ruling junta refused to allow most aid teams to enter its territory, according to Ynet.
