The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has opened a fund-raising mailbox to help victims of the earthquake in southwest China.

Nearly 20,000 are presumed dead after the May 12 earthquake in the Sichuan Province. The Chinese government estimates that up to 40,000 could be dead.

The money raised by JDC will be used on a nonsectarian basis.

The efforts are part of JDC’s International Development Program, which responds to natural and manmade disasters by providing immediate relief and long-term assistance. JDC is assisting three elderly Jews of the region’s estimated Jewish community of 1,500.
