A Knesset member who said that giving up land was an act of treason punishable by death will not be investigated.

Right-wing lawmaker Aryeh Eldad made the remarks last week after it was announced that Syria and Israel were holding indirect peace talks that, if successful, would involve giving up the Golan Heights. Eldad claimed to be using the official definition of treason contained in the country’s penal code.

An aide to Attorney General Menachem Mazuz said Wednesday that Eldad’s word choice was poor but not criminal, and should be dealt with in the public and political arenas.

Meretz lawmaker Ran Cohen had asked the Mazuz to investigate Eldad.

“These slanderous words are reminiscent to the days prior to the Rabin assassination and must never be allowed,” Cohen said.

Both the left wing and right wing condemned Eldad.
