YouTube is showing New York fifth-graders reading a story written by Gilad Shalit in that grade.

The kidnapped Israeli soldier’s story was published as a book illustrated by Israeli artists earlier this year.

On the YouTube video uploaded Monday to mark two years since Shalit was captured, five students read “When the Shark and the Fish First Met.” The video also is available at www.isrealli.org/shalit.

“Gilad was a boy our age when he wrote this story,” said Leslie Ramirez, 11, who participated in the reading. “If only we could write something so significant at this age. Today, no one knows where he is and he probably misses his parents.

“If the shark and fish can make peace, why can’t people?” Ramirez wondered.

Facebook also is marking Shalit’s two years of captivity by asking users to change their profile pictures Wednesday to Shalit’s, as well as their status for Wednesday and Thursday to “Waiting two years for Gilad Shalit.”
