A top Israeli official secretly met with ambassadors in Vienna involved in efforts to halt Iran’s nuclear program.
Aaron Abramovich, the director general of Israel’s Foreign Ministry, went Wednesday to the headquarters of the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna to lobby for stronger action to thwart Iran’s nuclear program, according to a report in Israel’s daily Ha’aretz.
Meeting with ambassadors to the IAEA, Abramovich presented them with Israel’s concerns about the Iranian program.
“The Iranians are buying time and are not cooperating with U.N. Security Council demands and the recommendations of the international community,” Abramovich told the ambassadors, according to Ha’aretz. “This must be addressed, and the IAEA is one of the entities that can do that.”
The visit was the first senior Israeli briefing of IAEA member ambassadors in several years, the report said. In the past, Israel has criticized the IAEA and its director Mohamed ElBaradei, for the agency’s lackadaisical attitude toward Iran’s nuclear program.
