Israel to raze yeshiva gunman’s home

Israel approved in principle the demolition of the home of the Palestinian terrorist who attacked the Mercaz Harav yeshiva.

Defense Minister Ehud Barak announced a decision Wednesday to raze the eastern Jerusalem home of Ala Abu Dahim, but said his family would be given two weeks to lodge appeals.

Abu Dahim gunned down eight students at the Jerusalem yeshiva before being shot dead. The March attack was followed by two bulldozer rampages by Jerusalem Arabs and spurred public calls for more effective counter measures.

Israel routinely demolished the homes of Palestinians who carried out suicide attacks until 2005, when the practice was suspended.

Though Israeli officials said the demolitions were effective in deterring future attacks, the assessment was that they also spread hostility toward the Jewish state among Palestinians.
