Warsaw hosting Jewish culture festival

Warsaw is hosting an annual festival of Jewish culture.

The fifth Festival of Jewish Culture-Singer’s Warsaw, from Sept. 6 to 14, will feature dozens of performances, workshops, book presentations, lectures and open-air events. Among the participants this year are the Klezmatics, Yale Strom and Chava Alberstein.

A street fair will be held on and around Prozna Street, a semi-ruined block downtown near the synagogue that is one of the only parts of the Warsaw ghetto area to have survived World War II.

The Singer festival, dedicated to the memory of Nobel Prize-winning Yiddish writer Isaac Bashevis Singer, is sponsored by the Shalom Foundation headed by the Lodz-born Yiddish singer Golda Tencer.

Celebrations at the festival will mark the 85th birthday of Tencer’s husband, Szymon Szurmiej, who directs Warsaw’s State Jewish Theater.
