The Israeli men’s wheelchair basketball team easily defeated China 80-41 at the Paralympics in Beijing.
The team recovered fast from Sunday’s loss to the United States, beating China in their second group B match on Monday. Roei Rozenberg led the game with 19 points, while Lior Dror and Dotan Meishar combined for 31 points and 19 rebounds. Israel now holds a 1-1 record, and is set to face a winless Brazil at the Indoor National Stadium on Tuesday. Forward Dotan Meishar told the Paralympic News Service, “I think it was a good first win. But we didn’t play very well and need to improve for the next game against Brazil.” Israel had several competitors in the table tennis competition Monday, but only one was successful – Liran Geva.
Ilanit Fridman, seventh-seeded in the women’s wheelchair tennis singles tournament, beat Chiyoko Ohmae of Japan 6-4, 6-0 to win her first round match on Monday. Paralympic Sailing opened competition in Qingdao, where the defending, gold medal-winning Israeli team of Dror Cohen, Arnon Efrati and Benny Vexler came in third in the first race for the Three-Person Keelboat (Sonar) competition, behind teams from the United States and Greece.
