The Houston Jewish community is bracing for the arrival of Hurricane Ike.

Jewish Family Service has taken a range of precautions, including the referral of calls to the organization’s Dallas office in the event its phone system goes down. Several community events have also been cancelled, according to the Web site of the Houston Jewish Herald-Voice.

JFS has also asked for information on storm evacuees in case family members are separated from one another. A 24/7 hotline is available for those in need of assistance.

Hurricane Ike was expected to make landfall near Galveston, Tex., some time late on Friday. Forecasters predicted the storm could case a water surge along the coast that tops 20 feet. As of midday Friday, only low-lying areas of Houston had been evacuated.
