The United States has contributed $28 million to bring relief to Palestinians who were caught in north Lebanon fighting.

The summer 2007 fighting started after radical Islamists infiltrated the refugee camps and engaged with forces loyal to the modern, Western-leaning Lebanese government.

The United States, the biggest single donor to the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, has kicked in an extra $18 million to the UNRWA’s north Lebanon operations, bringing its 2008 total to nearly $28 million. The money will go to rebuilding schools, clinics and homes, and to providing medicine, heat and hot water.
