An Israeli airstrike on Gaza, in response to more than 50 Kassam rockets fired into Israel in the last 48 hours, killed one Palestinian gunman.

The army said it was targeting a rocket launcher in Wednesday night’s attack.

The Hamas rocket attacks began late Tuesday night after an Israeli army operation in Gaza to destroy a tunnel used for arms smuggling that military intelligence learned would be used to kidnap an Israeli soldier into Gaza.

Most of the rocket attacks are centered on the Sderot area. One rocket landed in a residential area of Ashkelon.

Border crossings between Israel and Gaza remained closed on Thursday.
