Rep. Nita Lowey won’t be replacing Hillary Clinton in the U.S. Senate.
Lowey, the chairwoman of the Foreign Operations Appropriations subcommittee, withdrew today from consideration for the Senate seat. Her spokesman told Politico Lowey, 71, believes she can "be more effective" in the House. The 11-term congresswoman was a frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for the Senate seat back in 2000 but stepped aside when Clinton got in the race.
Clinton won’t resign her seat until she is confirmed for the post, and New York Gov. David Paterson says he won’t name a successor until the seat is vacant.. Jewish Reps. Jerrold Nadler and Steve Israel are among a group of names that have been mentioned as a Clinton replacement. Others include Reps. Nydia Velazquez and Kirsten Gillibrand and New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo.
